Creating a centralized To do list

Hi everyone!

Safe to say I'm extremely new to filemaker.  I'm attempting to build a dozen or so items at once, all in different directions and each with their own set of problems, but it's helping me learn things fast. However after taking a long break I just can't seem to wrap my head around anything anymore!

I've run into a particular problem while building a really simple To Do database, with the intent of having each to do relate to lets say a 'category'.  This is easy and done, but the main idea is to now build a main menu page where each category would be displayed neatly with a snippet of each to do item underneath. And an 'add To Do item' set of fields at the top that could instantly be sorted into whichever appropriate category once the field is entered.  In total I have about 18 categories, so I'll worry about fitting it all in later.

At the moment I have the to do list table relating to a category table which just has Id and cat. fields.

Hope this makes sense?

Thank you in advance
