Can I Look at Data 2 Tables Away Based on Sort Order 1 Table Away?

So here's a very sketchy entity-relationship diagram of my file:

From the vantage point of a record in Table W, I can set up a portal that shows me all the related records in X, based on the relationship WX:

And I can specify within relationship WX that I want Table X to be sorted in reverse chronological order, with the most recent records on top, and the portal will do that for me:

But really, I only want to work with the very most recent record, so I do away with the portal altogether and just display the data from the top record:

I also want to work with the data from 2 tables distant that X4 is related to:

But what I get instead is the Y and Z records related to the first record in X, not the one I want:

It appears that Tables Y and Z do not respect the sort order I set up in Relationship WX.

Is there anything I can do about this, or am I just SOL?
