ExecuteSQL doesn't update when used in caclulation field

I have put together an ExecuteSQL statement to pull the maximum value from a set of related records.  The field in the child table is a calculation field giving the date 30 days prior to the value entered in a date field (expiration date) in that table.  In Data Viewer the calculation works perfectly and updates immediately if I change the expiration date in one of the related records through a portal on one of the parent table layouts.  However, when I use the same calculation in a field of the parent table and put it on the layout all I get is a "0/0/0000" displayed.  I've checked context on the table and it is correct.  Can anyone tell me what I might be missing or why this shouldn't work as a calculation field?

We're on FileMaker 14 Server (Windows) and I'm using FMP 14 Advanced.

Thanks,

Craig
