I'm just starting with Filemaker Pro 16 ( but worked in FM some years ago). Somehow my List View Layout has changed to be just a copy of the Form View Layout. How can I get to go back to the List View? Thanks
First, pull down the view menu and see if "view as list" is selected. If not, select it. (there's a button for changing views in the status tool bar as well.)
If "View as list is already selected", my best guess is that you have a found set of just one record. Use "show all records" or perform a find to pull up a found set of multiple records.
Thanks so much for the reply. I checked and “View as List” is selected, and I have all 273 records found. I don’t know how I could have changed that view as it doesn’t seem like any way to change that one or the Table view either. I’m going to look a little further in the book.
Thanks for the suggestion though.
Any layout can be used for table view. List view, however, doesn't just magically change the location and arrangement of the fields.
Maybe I just didn't understand it correctly. What is happening is that when I choose List view it uses the same layout as the Form view, but like everything is on ONE long page. I can scroll down and see all the records one after the other, but with the same layout as the Form View. In a Form View, I only have one record on the screen at a time.
I just remembered from a sample database, or one of the Solutions, that it seemed to be a different arrangement than the Form View, but I think I just didn't realize what was happening.
So I am not going to worry about it, and maybe it will clear up itself, or I will have to just call someone at Filemaker to ask this question.

This is expected behavior for list view. Most list view layouts are specifically used for that view option.

Each layout needs to be separately designed to suit its purpose. If you simply change a Form view layout to List view it doesn't magically redesign itself, so of course the layout will look exactly the same, the only difference being that you can scroll through records instead of needing to switch. You need to consider what information you want to view in your List and design the layout accordingly. Typically you would use only a single row of fields, or maybe 2 or three rows, showing only some of the data available, then switch to a Form view layout to view more detailed information.
There are menu items (under View) to make the change, as well as the icons on the Status Toolbar. It's easy to make the change by accident.
Now that you know "where", the "why" isn't quite as important! And you know when you see this swap "how" to fix it.
You can cancel out the menu option by setting any layout to only allow the view you want—
