Inventory, dealing with lots/BOM

I’m trying to construct an inventory/sales database for a manufactured food.

Are there any tutorials/demo files out there for dealing with assigning a particular lot to a bill of materials (BOM)?

My first hurdle is figuring out how to handle ingredients, as each ingredient will be purchased at different times and need to have a lot number associated with it. And then a particular lot may only be partially consumed during a manufacturing run. It sounds very brute-force in my head, but I’m wondering if I should create a table for each ingredient (about 20). Each record would then be a specific lot, and I could set up portals to each ingredient on my batch BOM layout.

Crazy? Better ideas? Thanks!
