Floating Portals

I know there isn't any easy way to place a portal inside another portal.

I've successfully placed Portal B inside of a popup that resides above Portal A.  When the user clicks on the button inside Portal A, Portal B is displayed at the top and outside Portal A.

This popover approach seems a bit kludgy because its difficult figuring out which portal row is being used.

So here's what I'm wondering...instead of having a static position, is there a way to create a "floating" popover which would allow the popover to be displayed on the same plane as whichever portal row is being used, but outside the portal?

In other words is there a way to make the popover move vertically along the right outer edge of the portal?  I'm thinking/hoping that the popover might be able to use the coordinates for another element inside the active portal to determine the y-coordinate.

Make sense?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
