I am trying to give someone access to a solution from a remote location and we can't get past "The translator for this file format could not be found or could not be initialized" message. The client is on Window 10.1 and is using FM 16.
from a remote location
How? is the file hosted and they use "open remote" or are you trying some kind of file sharing?
So we have it hosted at our location on a server and we are sending the client a link to the db. We set them up as a user in the solution. We do it all the time so someone can demo our product. It just isn't working this time for some reason...
What kind of “link”? Seems like you should be publishing to the web but are actually using a FikeMaker client.
Do they have FileMaker Pro or FileMaker Go (iPad)? IF not, then your option may be Web Direct where they use a Browser.
A link to a "hosted" (shared with or without FMServer) must use one of these methods. Web Direct requires FMSever for the browser to see it.
I had a similar issue with opening the solution using a desktop shortcut that points to fmp:/xx.xx.xxx.xx/Database+Name
This works on most of the PCs I've tried it on, including other Windows 10 machines. But a few PCs come up with the message "The translator for this file format could not be found or could not be initialized." Clicking OK, then opens the Launch Centre, but doesn't open the solution as expected.
What I found was simply adding another forward slash before the FMS name or IP address
It is great found. I can reprecate it on my Windows7 / FM16.
The reason it wouldn't work with 1 or 0 slashes is simple (it is not valid URL, need 2) but the resulted error is interesting.
The error is for opening/converting unavailable file format is provided. In this case, the file looks found (since it doesn't say "not found") and the type is clearly .fmp12. (The error appears regardless of there is extension or not in the URL)
If there is 3 slashes, different error occurs.
This looks extra slash remain then treated as first character of host name.
If I remove first 6 characters (for fmp://) from the URL with 1 slash (then hostname lose first character) then put it as command parameter (can't work as URL in shortcut, so I tried same command as fmp: protocol. But fmp: protocol handler doesn't remove it, so this test is not so meaningful...)
"C:\Program Files\FileMaker\FileMaker Pro 16 Advanced\FileMaker Pro Advanced.exe" ocalhost/50.fmp12
there is no error, launch center is opened.
My test is standalone without server, so FMPro is already launched (for sharing). Then the meaning of opening launch center may be a bit diffrent from philmcgeehan's result.
Has anyone found a solution for this?
This is the link we publish: fmp://192.168.1.50/ccr_r_database.fmp12
Has worked great for years, just like that. A few computers, Windows 10, we get the translator error. Client is on Filemaker 16. Other databases open fine, with the link being in the same format.
