Find unique values in a defined period

I have been reading the forum and I cannot find the answer I am looking for. I have designed a database to track patients. Any time they are admitted they get an account number that is a unique identifier for the admission. They also have a Medical record number (MR#) that is a unique identifier for that patient anytime he/she is admitted, so it does not change during different admissions. I want to be able to find how many patients and how many admissions do we have for a defined period of time.

For instance: During last October 220 patients (different MR#)  were admitted 240 (different account#) times. So I need to identify only the first time that the MR# appears during that period. Is there any way of doing that with the find mode?

So far I know how many records are duplicated, but I cannot distinguish between a patient coming 2, 3 or 4 times...

Any help is welcomed. Please, be aware I am a MD, so I have no idea what is a SQL.

Thank you for your time,
