Renumbering Portal Rows

Hi, I'm creating a database that allows the user to store his/her own notes in a portal.  And there will likely be times when the user may delete a portal row, several rows, or even all of the rows to start over.

Here's the problem....let's say the user creates eight comments with portal rows numbered 1 thru 8.  Then she intentionally deletes all the rows. When she starts over, the portal row numbering continues at "9" rather than going back to "1".

Is there a way to either automatically refresh the portal numbering at "1"?  Or manually click a button that would accomplish the same..If it's a button, perhaps one located outside the portal.  It'd normally be hidden but would only show when there are no portal rows?

It'd be awesome if I could get the numbering to re-adjust when any portal row is deleted...but that's probably a "pie-in-the-sky" wish.  I'm more concerned about renumbering from "1" when all the rows are deleted.

Any guidance is welcomed and appreciated.
