Using multiple records from one table in one Layout

I developed my database 10 years ago when our small high school opened.  I track students, parents and donors.  My students are growing up, and I need to change them to parents!  I currently have students and parents in one record in one table, and I have donors in a different table.  This arrangement doesn't allow for contacts to change from one type of contact to another.

What should I do?

I'd like to be able to still show all my related contacts (mom, dad, kid) in one layout with their pertinent contact information - but if I combine everyone into one table, I don't know how to do that.

I was thinking that, when a student graduates, I might just need to export the mom, dad and kid into a table where they can operate more as individuals.  If that's what I need to do, what's the protocol, or best practice for maintaining relationships - how do I know that Kid A is the son of Dad B and Mom R - or that Dad B and Mom R are married?
