how to put a footer in preview
The 'footer' is a Layout part and added to the layout while in Layout Mode. Keep in mind that the footer appears on every page (in preview and as printed).
Do you have have specific questions about the footer contents in preview that might differ from what actually get printed?
We do not charge by the word.
Care to elaborate?
Sorry I'm New at Fm and forms. I have a database working and when sorting, I look at the results in Preview and probably won't ever print. I have a Amount and Tax column, that I would like to see the totals at the bottom. I have the totals working in the footer in the 2 other modes.
Depending on how your total calculations are set up, you may need to use a sub-summary part in your layout, not the footer. Create a new report using the wizard and add sub-summary and grand totals and see how that structure is put together. Alternatively, upload a copy of your database with enough records to test and I'll take a look at it. Why view in Preview if you aren't going to print? Just build the layout to present the information without having to change modes.
You might also test trailing grand Summary parts.
That's an interesting approach. Using multiple sub-summary parts with sorts based on class could yield some interesting results. Thanks for the idea.
A calculation field placed in a footer that does not reference a summary field from the same table as that of the layout or a regular data field (number, date, text, etc.) won't necessarily show the same value in Browse mode that it does in Preview.
In Browse Mode the values come from (or calculate from the context of) the current record. Click on different records and the values can change. In Preview Mode, the values use the context of the last record on the page. (Headers do the same but reference data from the context of the first record on the page.)
So you may need to describe what you want to see in that footer in more detail so that others can help you figure out how to get the values that you want to appear in that footer.
And while there used to be other reasons for preview in much older versions of FileMaker, there still are cases where the data will not present as desired in Browse mode. Sliding Fields and layouts configured in layout setup to print multiple columns are two such cases that come to mind. (We once had to preview summary reports but that hasn't been necessary for quite a while now.)
