I can't seem to filter the way I perceive possible ?

I have a system that has a table named "Invoices". A portal on the "JOB" layout  shows  billing history of all the related invoices sorted by "billing date". When payment is received "paid date" and "amount paid" and pay method [cust_chk_no]  is entered"  There are three basic pay methods.   check , cash, square (credit card)

     easy to filter for "cash" and ""square"

why doesn't below filter work for invoice items undeposited that are checks a screen shot 2018-01-16 at 10.34.46 AM.png?

Case (

invoice items undeposited::amount paid >0;

not IsEmpty (invoice items undeposited::cust_chk_no);

lower(Left ( invoice items undeposited::cust_chk_no ; 3 ) ) ≠ "cas";

lower(Left ( invoice items undeposited::cust_chk_no ; 3 ) ) ≠ "vis";

True

)

   essentially >  deposits_UI :: amount paid ≠ 0

"zero" thing works but multiple conditions within scope of applied filter doesn't

portals with one statement such as ="cash" work fine.
