Linking records by relationship or script?

Curious as to what the community thinks is a best practice. I've a table of Schools and a table of Students, related by Schools::pkSchool to Students::fkSchool. I've done this one of two ways in the past. The school name is unique, and create a secondary relationship of Schools::Name to Students::School Name. From there, add a script trigger that when the school name is selected on the Student record, the pkID is populated into the fkID field. Downsides is another table occurrence and a script of one line. The other method I've used is to capture the school name, pop a window off-screen, find the school, grab the pkID, close the window and update the fkID on the student record. This requires a more involved script and flying off to another window.

I'm wondering if there is a simpler way to accomplish this, or if in my old habits, I've missed a better method.

Thanks in advance.
