I have a client running FM 15 desktop with a FM 14 server.
They want to upgrade to FM 16 desktop.
Any reason they need to upgrade the server too?
I know it will work, just not sure if there are any advantage to FM 16 server?
Obviously I am not explaining myself properly. Developer tools was not the right term, I mean features like new scripting featuring, Rest API, and things like that. Things that will allow me to program faster.
I am not asking them to install FMPA at all.
Thanks for tanking the time to help me.
I'm not certain about FMS14, but I know that I can't connect to an FMS13 server with FMP16.
I have heard that there is a speed improvement if you have FMS16 + FMP16, vs FMS15 + FMP15, or even FMS15 + FMP16.
With the server still at 14, there's very little upside to go to 16. You will be able to use most of the new 16 features on the client but nothing that can be executed server-side that would use those features. Why would they want to update only the client and not the server? Usually they are licensed together...
A combination of lazy and cheap. They don't want to deal with their server and don't want to pay me to deal with it, unless they have too.
But then why 16? Are they after some specific functionality? If so, knowing what it is can help determine how bad running it on FMS14 will be.
I asked them to upgrade because I am finding the developer tools to be a significant benefit. They asked me if they had to update the server too and I said it would be a wise thing to do but I would confirm if it was required.
I think I will just tell them yes to avoid any potential issues.
I think I'm missing something: only you as the developer would need FMPA so you can use the advanced developer tools and the other clients can stay at FMP15 as they are now. Or do you insist on each workstation having FMPA? That's be an expensive way to license me thinks...
