External HD backups fail unless logged in

Various versions of MacOS and FMS over the last few years. I've set up an external hard drive to act as a backup repository in case the computer has a major failure (it's happened once in ~20 years). Some times I can setup the external hard drive as an alternative backup location, and everything works fine. I can log out of the computer and backups occur as expected. Unfortunately, I have some servers that refuse to connect to the external drive unless I'm logged in. For a while I thought it had to do with the installation of FMS and having the external drive connected before the installer, but that doesn't seem to matter. I've checked permissions between FMS that does and doesn't connect, and I can see no difference. Running the latest versions currently, and I'm hoping someone here has a fix.
