Determine the field or object name that triggered a "on modify" trigger

After importing new records into an intermediate table, we match those records to already existing ones. The user then sees a layout with the new record in global fields on the left side and the existing one on the right and should be able to correct the existing record based on the new data. Due to how we get the data for import it is often the case that an information is not stored in the field where it belongs, e.g. "EMail" is in "Phone" and "Phone" in "Street".

If the user now marks text on the left side and drags it over to the right, we would like to replace the target field rather then add the new text. As drag&drop doesn't change the focus, all out attempts to do this using script triggers failed so far.

Is there any way to determine the field or object name that triggerd a "on modify" trigger? Or any other idea how we could tell the script which field to work with?
