To be clear, you have a file with a calculated field that you want to import the data into a new FMP db. Just convert the previous calc field into text, the data will remain, then you can import into the new solution without having to create new calculations.
Yet, when I try to use getfieldcontents using the data stored in Field A (i.e. "Names::First"), I do not get the data from the other table.
If fieldA holds the text (or a calculation that resolves to the text) "Names::First", then a calculation field defined as
GetField ( fieldA )
will return the value stored in the field First from the TO Names (provided it is in scope).
He has not accused you of lying. But you have two basic problems that are hindering efforts to help you:
a) Vague descriptions lacking in complete examples
b) A data model that seems extremely unlikely to be workable
Perhaps you could share a small example file illustrating what you are trying to do?
