For a bit of fun. ‘FileMaker Go is the 2nd best app on IOS, and the winner is.......’
I can see I've really stimulated active discussion with this one - LOL!
OK, it was semi serious, and as we have typical UK Easter weather tipping down outside, here are my thoughts. FM Go is fantastic as we're all aware and unique to the FileMaker Platform. However, my iPhone and iPad are used for other things that (to me) are more important. Trying to list a no. 1 is really difficult.
Duet allows me to use a small i5 MacBook to run our very mobile company and still have a second screen using a 10.5" iPad Pro, a truly mobile and productive setup.
Microsoft OneNote - used with an Apple pencil, all note taking done this way for all developers, great when sat in meeting with clients and no lugging of paper notepads around. Joint development has shared notes between the developers and it is just so darn flexible. Also, all notes are synchronised with the developers' Macs or PCs. This took over from Notability, which is also brilliant, but the Apple pencil support in OneNote made it too irresistible.
Honourable mentions go to Microsoft RDP and Citrix Receiver - running and developing on an IOS device. Great for quick support when out of the office and for clients who don't want to invest in a full FM Go/mobile solution, Dropbox for the convenience, LogMeIn for additional peace of mind and Outlook for not making me use Apple Mail.
However, upon reflection my no. 1 is without a doubt Jump Desktop. It has saved my bacon so many times, for example when queuing to get on a plane, receiving a reported issue with a server, in particular when used with an iPhone X screen, can log in over 3/4G see what is going on and get it sorted before the plane takes off. Quicker than calling and briefing another member of staff. It has SSL tunnelling built in and server configurations can be shared across iCloud or be exported/imported. This of course, is no. 1 to me as our servers are used worldwide and things don't always pick 9 to 5 GMT to raise their heads, if I didn't have this need I'd really struggle to prioritise Duet and OneNote.
In addition adding a bluetooth keyboard and Citrix X1 mouse and I have a proper FileMaker development platform on an RDP server. Yes I can use a mouse running a full copy of FileMaker Pro Advanced on an iPad. The lightest fully functioning development setup I've found.
Would love to hear how IOS helps other developers and hear about some apps I've not considered.
