Using a dropdown list overwrites the data in the fields

This is what happens to you after 10 months of not using Filemaker...something simple gets in the way.

I need to use a value list for a dropdown to enter details into a field. At the point of creating the value list, I am:

Using values from the first field (Primary Key)

Also display values from the second field (Description)

Show values only from second field

Now, this does result in the primary key ending up in the field, which I knew would happen and I have a plan to fix that.  What I cannot understand is how the 'Description' field seems to get overwritten with the value from the Primary Key when I select an item from a dropdown.  For example:

PrimaryKey          Description

1                           Oranges

2                           Lemons

3                            Apples

I use the dropdown on the layout and description for Lemons is overwritten with a '3', so the dropdown on the next time of clicking reads:

Oranges

3

Apples

The field I have the dropdown on is set for field entry in Find and Browse.

I think I'm missing something very basic here which is daft.

Thanks in advance.
