Preserve formatting while using MYSQL storage

The setup: I have a FileMaker 16 database with a lot of text in it. The database is connected to a MySQL database where all information is stored and can be retrieved by other FileMaker instances. Data is exchanged using SQL commands with the MBS plugin.

The problem: Upon writing text into MySQL, all formatting is lost. I am looking for a way to save bold, italic, underline, and if possible text color.

The approach so far: there are a variety of ways to turn fm text into CSS or HTML, but they all do way too much in transcoding all special characters as well. And I can't find a function that works the other way round without the need for endless recursions over hundreds of substitutes. So what I'm looking for is a pair of matching functions that encode only the filemaker text formats into something I can store in MySQL, and restores the original look on the way back.
