Using checkbox set to find records associated with either of 3 values

I have a field InvestmentFund which may queried to search for just one fund or any 2 or all 3; it seems the perfect scenario for a checkbox set. Yet when I copy the field's value(s) when 2 funds are selected, I get something like "1 2",  the primary keys for both funds. I place this in a variable $funds and then I go to another layout where I must find the found set that either belongs to fund with id 1 or id 2. I used to assign the fund id to this field but now since the variable contains 2 options, it does not find anything!

How can I extract the elements of the string "1 2" and how can I do something like so:

Set Field [DD:Field, "1"]

OR

Set Field[DD:Field, "2"]

Thus, 2 questions: how to parse the string "1 2" and how to set fields to be combined using an OR instead of the usual implied AND.

Please lend me a hand here!!
