Need basic help to create a list of unique values from a related table.

I have 15+ years of experience with Filemaker, but no experience with SQL or the new UniqueValues function in FMP 16.  I have created a database of 7 related tables, with portals. etc., that contains thousands of records of observations of species of native butterflies.  I want to be able to create a unique list of species, without duplicates, from any found set of records.  This list would include all the species observed that meet the search criteria (date(s), location, etc.).  I know various ways to create a list of all the records, but I want to remove duplicates, and then sort the unique list by a field from a related table that contains the taxonomic order of the butterfly species.

I have read several discussions about this general issue, but they are all sailing over my head. After reading three threads on this, I still cannot determine into what the UniqueValues function or the SQL language goes.  When I went into the Script space, and searched on UniqueValues, nothing came up.  I'm sure I am missing something very obvious and basic, but since I don't know what I'm missing, I can't find it. Does the SQL that several people are recommending go in a script?  A calculation field?  Or somewhere else?  Same question for the UniqueValues function. I'm afraid I just don't know what to do with them.

I've read this:

Thanks for your help and patience with my lack of knowledge.
