Filemaker rest api is occasionally returning 502 errors

I have a website that is making REST API requests to a filemaker server.

The filemaker server is running Filemaker 16 on a Mac Pro .

For the most part it is running smoothly. However, under load (I think), Filemaker starts to return 502 Bad Gateway errors instead of the JSON responses I expect.

It seems like filemaker or the server is crashing because once we get a 502, we'll continue to get 502s for a few moments.

We heavily cache all of the requests we can to keep from hammering on the filemaker server but still it will return 502 errors here and there.

Is there a way to increase the performance for the Filemaker server? Would this be in the macOS Server or in filemaker? And is there a way to increase the timeout on the server?

We can see the errors happening in the filemaker logs so I assume it is not macOS Server returning the 502 but I don't know.
