I'm new to my company and our old programmer left in 2016. We do not know what his user name or password were for the file. Does anyone have password recovery software you are willing to run on the file?
Thank you in advance!
Hi Monica, this topic comes up frequently in the community. To summarize:
Please don't send your file to someone at random without having them sign an agreement that will protect your data. The easiest and safest way to get access to the file is to contact the former developer and ask for the full access credentials. There may be legal ramifications of cracking a file depending on how it was built.
FileMaker, Inc. offers paid tech support that may be able to assist with this type of thing, phone number here:
Contact FileMaker Customer Support | FileMaker
There is a 3rd party tool available for purchase (~$40) that runs on windows and can "crack" unencrypted .fmp12 files:
Passware FileMaker Key
Note that this "breaks" the file, as in it inserts an actual string of encrypted "new password" text over the old password check. This could potentially corrupt a file, but AFAIK nobody has ever reported that behavior. If you hire anyone outside of FileMaker Inc. to perform this crack, most likely they are using that utility (or one based on the same technology). You can run this app via WineX on mac if needed.
If a file has been encrypted at rest (unlikely if you are really using version 12, as the feature came out in 13), the above 3rd party utility will not work. At that point the only course of action would be to get the password from the original developer or contact FileMaker Inc's tech support.
Thank you very much!!!!
