I have been following the discussions on UUIDs, which I am using for sync operations in our products, so when I attended the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition recently, I was very interested in the work being done at Lancaster University and their collaborators on the generation of genuinely random numbers.

 

Demonstrated was an inexpensive USB device that uses a quantum diode at the heart of their circuit that has far lower residual patterns in its random numbers than those generated by computer algorithms.
