Does indexing affect sort behavior?

The forums are ambiguous.

Some folks argue indexing impacts sorting - or imply such in their explanations on other issues.

As far as I am aware, indexing impacts searches (find) and relationship joins (which are finds in their own right).

But not sorting.

The FMPA documentation does not mention that indexing is a factor in sort performance.

Can someone clarify the reality once and for all?

That is, if I sort 5 million records on an unindexed field, the time taken is the same as if the field were indexed.

Thank you.
