Trying to roll our accounting into a Filemaker database possibly. What are some options and recommendations from the community?
New Millennium has a robust and scalable accounting solution called Genesis. You can learn more about Genesis here: New Millennium Genesis Accounting - New Millennium
I'd be happy to connect you with one of our consultants to answer any questions and explore how we can help you with your FileMaker accounting solution.
www.xero.com is a New Zealand organization that makes a pretty nifty accounting program.
Where you get into challenges are that accounting programs that deal with legal requirements such as payroll and taxes are very location specific and there is a lot of work keeping those current, which is why there are a handful of vertical solutions in other software that does these things. It all can be done in FM, but if it is just custom work, then it is hard to justify the time spent keeping it current compared to a vertical accounting program. For that reason, I often deal with a company that has FileMaker doing their CRM and non-accounting business processes and the the accounting might be done by Quickbooks. In those cases, I sync FileMaker data with the Quickbooks. Productive Computing has some good software for syncing to the application version of Quickbooks and Geist Interactive has an API connector called fmQBO for connecting FileMaker to the Quickbooks cloud (pretty nifty stuff if you ask me!).
Thanks, Taylor - great advice! As a side note, in addition to what you already mentioned above where we have the QuickBooks Desktop version (FM Books Connector plug-in), we also have the FM Books Connector plug-in for the online version of QuickBooks using the same programming methodologies. If a developer learns the desktop version, they have essentially learned the foundations to work with the online version and vice-versa. New this year, we are offering an optional comprehensive video training course which could be helpful for those new to the world of plug-ins and/or accounting integration with FileMaker. http://www.productivecomputing.com Thanks for the mention!
Genesis Accounting from New Millennium exists to serve as a "best-of-both worlds" option where you can use FileMaker for your accounting needs, pull accounting data out of its silo, and customize using the platform we're all familiar with. You also benefit from adopting a supported, evolving product. Our integration is all native to FileMaker and we can tightly tie both whatever production solution you happen to have in FileMaker to your accounting data.
That said, Taylor is right -- the reason you'd adopt Genesis is *because* it's in FileMaker. There's often customization involved and that naturally requires time and/or expense. Sometimes just going with an off-the-shelf solution like Xero or QuickBooks can make sense.
As to the legal and local requirements -- we do have international clients. It would depend on, naturally, your specific requirements as to how much work it might be to adopt Genesis.
Just as Danielle mentioned, we'd be happy to talk.
