WebDirect path syntax - # vs /

When I try to open a file via WebDirect using https://[host name]/fmi/webd#[file name], I see the Web Direct Launch Centre, whereas if I use https://[host name]/fmi/webd/[file name] (slash instead of hash) I go straight to the file (which is what I want).

This isn't a problem, but the FM documentation states that / is an alternative to #, implying that the outcome should be the same, and I'm worried that I've missed something significant or misunderstood.

Any clarification much appreciated.
