Any ideas how one can automate moving data from a FM record into a row of a Google doc that is
loaded into a webviewer.
And also the other way around?
If you are talking about a row in a Google sheet use the Sheet API. Data can go direct from FM to a Sheet. In my experience the Sheets in a web viewer can take up to 5 minutes to update. Usually it is less than 60 seconds though.
Thanks for the link.
Is the 1 to 5 minute lag a function of the web viewer ?
There are two ways to interact with GSheets in a web viewer. One is directly logging into Google and seeing the document. This gives you the entire GSheet experience in a web viewer but it is not very reliable. Some things do not work well or at all. You will get faster data updates this way though.
The other way is to also use the GDrive API to “publish” the Sheet. This interface is much smoother in the data viewer and does not require users to login, but due to the nature of the publishing technology there is sometimes a delay in publishing changes. Often you get the updated data within 10 seconds, but if the servers are busy there is no guarantee.
I like the publishing method as it is easier on the user interface even at the cost of some data delays.
Thanks for the tips!
1.In order to use "publish" I assume you would need to be the owner/creator of the GDoc?
2.On another note:
I was testing with the GDoc ( I pasted the address into the web viewer ) and I kept getting
an error dialog stating that "can't be loaded" with a reload button. Clicking the reload button
allowed it to load. But it would return especially if data was changed directly on the GDoc on the site.
3.Also a notification pops up in the WV stating "This version of Safari is no longer supported. Please upgrade to a supported browser.Dismiss"
My default browser is Chrome. Not sure what that's all about.
FileMaker uses Safari or IE depending on your platform regardless of your default browser. The rendering issues is one of the problems with not using the published url.
To publish you do need to have the proper rights to use the GDrive API.
Hopefully FM improves the web viewer ability in the future.
