External data sources, circular references: good, bad or ugly ?

I started last week a new contract where in short I will have to review a whole set of files and rework them in order to use the best practices. The development of these started in the time where it was one file = one table, no themes, etc. Some are quite old, but all been brought to FMP 15.

I thought having a map of the files would be a good way to start. I then discovered there are circular references about external data sources: for example, File_B is set as an external data source for File_A, and File_A is set an external data source for File_B. For sure I will have to bring into a single file some of them, but I wonder if these circular references may have been harmful to the data in any way ?
