I created dropdown menu that displays a list with story types and would like to see the information in text fields when ever I choose a different story type. How do I do this? Thanks!
Set up a table where two fields in your record have the values from your plot types value list, another field has the "about" text and a fourth field as the "examples" text.
There are three basic approaches that I can think of that fit your description of what you want to do. Which is the right one for your solution depends one what else you need to do with your solution
For all three approaches, define a "use values from field" value list that draws it's values from this table.
1) Set up a global field with the value list on a layout based on this same table. Use the data selected in the value list to find the matching record. Both Go To Related Records (if you set up a self join relationship) or a scripted find can find your record.
2) From a layout based on a related table, set up the match field with this value list. (The match field should link to the field defined as the "first field" supplying values to your value list.)
Put the "about" and "examples" fields from the related table on your layout. They will be empty until you select a value and establish a link to the matching related record.
3) Set up the same as 2) but define a pair of text fields for "about" and "examples". Use auto-enter field options to copy over the values of the corresponding "about" and "examples" fields in the table you set up for this value and associated text fields.
Thanks, Phil. I will give it a try.
I am using Filemaker maybe only once a year for a project so I am not very good with it. I created two story creation apps last year which I am happy about and could most of it only get to work because of the excellent videos made by Guy Stevens.
I've left out a lot of detail as to provide that level of detail for three different approaches would be too much to put into a discussion. Feel free to select the one that you think is best and ask questions about it. Then I or others can fill in more detail specific to that approach.
And if you aren't sure about which approach is best, describe how you want to use the info looked up via your value list and we can help you figure that out also.
Thanks. I will simple add new records for every story type and fill in the blanks instead. That's for me easier to put together.
Is there a way to avoid users to edit a text field, but still be able to use the vertical scroll bar in that field to scroll down text information in that field?
You could define a calculation field that copies the value of the text field and format it with the scroll bar.
