In range enables two entry boxes
"aa" and "etx2"
I ve tried AA - ok
q - error
EF - ok
a - error
So I wonder if the in range option requires ASCII order and it's case insensitive.
Am I right?
It does require a known order, a couple of links that may help:

I'm not sure what the from/to logic would be with the example you've given?
It’s case insensitive and follows the same rules that you’d use to arrange words in alphabetical order.
I haven’t tried it, but I think that you can get different results by changing the indexing options on the field.
I test it with "unicode" index, it continue case insensitive. I'd like to say it is bug... but anyway I'd use calculation for such validation.
(A..Z contain AA but not ZZ, etc.)
