Global field misbehaviour when deployed to server

I have been using a database locally for some time and today deployed it to Filemaker Server.  In one of the tables there is a global text field that contains a path c:/user/files/etc etc.  The database works fine on the server, and records can be edited and added as normal.  The global text field that contains the path however somehow refuses to "save"....

When the database is open, the path field can be edited and the database recognises the new path (it is used elsewhere in the same database to calculate the path to display images in a webviewer window). When the database is closed, and then re-opened, the path field goes back to the value that it held when the database was uploaded to the server.  All other fields maintain their updated values and all new records are present.

This seems completly illogical, but it is the first time I have ever used FMS.   Am I doing something wrong?

FMPA 17 (latest version) on windows 10 enterprise

FMS 17 (latest version)

Many thanks for any asistance
