I use base elements, the free version.
I have always installed it on each individual user's system.
Can it be installed on the FM Server instead?
Yes. We run it just fine. It just takes a little care when scripting.
If you consider an also totally-free micro-service with code you write and, in particular, code you control, you can install it anywhere. Locally, on the server, or anywhere on the Internet. If you're doing file type activities on the server, you'd install it on the server, or local on the machine.
Base Elements plugin works great on FileMaker Server and FileMaker Pro. We use on both products but for different kind of purposes. For FileMaker Server most of the time we use for FileMaker Schedules or Perform Script on Server.
I have the same question, but I've looked all over for some sort of setup, examples, what works on server vs what works on client, etc...
Nothing. I just wish there was a comprehensive HOW TO guide for the particular plugin I'm wanting to use (BaseElements). If it exists, I can't find it.
Does this mean it's either/or? Does your access to the functions and Script steps change whether you install it on server or on the client? How to install it on the server so that it's equivalent to an client install?

Functions all call the same way. What is different usually has to do with file locations. On the server, your Documents folder is in the FileMaker Server library and not a users library. Same with Desktop. And unlike on a desktop, the fmsserver user is running and not a user and the permissions can be different. So you can't touch files or folders anywhere on the computer as easily if logged in as a user. This is obviously done for safety and security so services don't crash into each other.
To install it on the Server go to the ...FileMaker Server/Database Server/Extensions folder and copy the Base Elements plugin there.
You may have to restart the server. Make sure you have turned on in the Admin Console the use of plugins and approved the Base Elements plugin there too.
