Designing custom icons

Over the past couple of years, I've been designing SVG icons using Inkscape.  Then I use Geist Interactive's handy SVGinator to add the tags that FileMaker Pro requires.

But often my icons still end up doing weird things when I import them into FileMaker. Sometimes they are fine, but more often they look terrible. And sometimes (like today), I just give up on making an icon work.

Generally, what has been the most successful & pain-free method you've followed to design your own icons?

What tools have you tried for creating your own custom icons -- Illustrator, Inkscape, other online options?

Which have worked best for you in terms of creating icons that stay within FileMaker Pro's grammar?

Have you still had to hand-edit your SVG XML after using a WYSIWG tool like Inkscape?

Thanks,

Mark
