Direct connect or VPN

I have clients that need remote access for me and there employees. Right now I am giving them two options.

  1. Direct connect by opening port 5003
  2. VPN

I give a slight nudge to direct connect option, as I feel it is a little easier for there employees. But so far most of the clients have chosen VPN. Another important part of this is there VPN instructions are giving direct control of the FileMaker server witch I need but the employees definitely do not.

So my questions

  1. Is direct connect less secure then VPN?
  2. Dose the above answer change if you limit the port access to only certain IP address?
  3. If VPN is the best option how do a frame a suggestion that instead of giving access to a local computer though VPN they make the employees computer act like it is local?
