Hi there!

Can I create a reference to a file stored externally (FMS) in a container?

I am currently working on a multi-environment file (Mac and Win) that uses “Store only a reference to the file". I am trying to change the process to Insert the actual file (PDF, Excel, Word, etc.) and store it externally in the FM server for several reasons (users getting the error message, “The file cannot be found…” when a file was inserted from a different OS, learning that the 'reference' option is deprecated, etc.).

I have read about the advantages of storing files externally and I have read several posts related to the deprecation of the 'store as reference' feature. However, I'd like the users to be able to 'view' the stored files without having to 'export the field contents' each time they need them. I understand that if the file is a PDF, it could be seen interactively, but I'd like the users to be able to view any other type of document as well (Excel, Word).

I want it to work smoothly for both, Mac and Window users.

Any tips would be appreciated.
