Is anyone having trouble updating FMP17 with the latest update. I download the file then it says to install then you need to close FMP when I close FPM the installation closes as well. I tried this about three times with same result.

I'm sorry you're having issues. Windows or Mac OS?
I've just installed it on one iMac running OS X 10.12.6 Sierra. I had no DB files open, the launcher was open (I had just opened the app to download the update). Upon confirming the install, the installer closed FMPA 17 (not just the window, but the application) and the installer continued without incident. Then FMPA 17 was reopened automagically.
And I've just completed a backup on my laptop (my primary dev machine while abroad) and just now did the update to it as well. That machine is a mid-2018 MBP running High Sierra (10.13.6). The experience was exactly the same. I had FMPA 17 closed, I opened it, I manually checked for updates (I had clicked "remind me later" when I started work this morning, so had to get it from Help menu). I left the launcher window open while it did the download; clicked install; FMPA was automatically closed (the application, not just the window); update installed and app reopened.
Just to share a data point or two.
I installed it last night without any issues. Mac OS High Sierra. Opened FileMaker, was prompted that an update was available, closed the file I had opened (but not quit FileMaker), and the update ran without issue. Re-opened the file I wanted to work with and everything seemed fine.
I haven't done a thorough check of every possible feature, of course, but the update process itself worked fine for me.
Hello,
I have seen a few cases like yours ByteTheBullet, and you just helped confirm my suspicions. Some MAC users have experienced issues with the FileMaker not updated from the downloaded patch on our website. I will leave a note here for any viewers who have the same issue.
Instead of trying to install the patch from the downloads page on our website, install from FileMaker itself. You will either get the message to update when you open FileMaker. Or you can go to the Help menu and click 'Check for Updates'.
If anyone has anymore issues, please let us know.

You need to close all filemaker "windows" but don't close the application itself.
