Unstored Calc fields - do they require processing if not on a layout?

Working on optimization of a solution that's slowed down a bit over time.

We have 8-10 unstored calc fields (mostly SQL lookups/counts) in a particular table.

These fields do not show in ANY 'normal' layout, and in fact are only visible on a few report layouts (although they are in a table that's a commonly used table for constant access).

Does the presence of such an unstored calc field slow down the solution at all, IF it is not on a particular layout?

In other words, does it ever calculate at a point in time just because that record is opened?

Or does it only calculate when it is to display on a layout (or is referenced by another field)?
