Multiple values in a field  - script addition

I think this is simple but I'm confused ...

I have inherited a database that provides for multiple values in one field (contact type) ... This field is shown on a data entry layout with a checkbox set - allowing the user to 'check' multiple values (parent, staff, board member, donor, etc.). I am now trying to modify a script (elsewhere in the database) such that when a contact makes a $ donation then the contact type of "Donor" is added to the contact type field.

I modified the script that runs when a donation is received to set a variable "Donor" and then go to the TO providing the correct (contacts) context. Now I want to add that "Donor" to the contact type. I've had some success but no matter what I try the result is that the other values in the contact type field are cleared out. So if they had been contact type = Parent and Staff then when the donation is entered and the script runs the Parent and Staff are gone and only Donor remains.

Any ideas?
