Can you merge PDFs on Server?

My database has a table which includes a container field, into which a PDF is placed. Each PDF has its own record in this table.

I have a script which does the following:

1. Decide which PDFs to merge.

2. Export the PDFs from the container fields of their records to /temp

3. Merge the PDFs into a single PDF.

4. Import the merged PDF into a new record of the PDFs table.

This works fine, but it's slow because the PDFs are downloaded from the server to the client, and then the merged PDF is uploaded back to the server. I expect it would be much faster if it could be done on the server (particularly when the client is off-site). But my script does not work as a Perform Script on Server because step 3 is accomplished via a shell script called by AppleScript, and Perform AppleScript isn't supported by PSOS.

Is there a way to merge PDFs on Server?
