No luck in converting the date field to text representation mm/dd/yyyy before importing either.
Many thanks for your help.
How about starting at the beginning?

Not as a general rule, it doesn't. There are a variety of ways to import data from an excel file, including excel files that contain dates, and they don't routinely result in an empty field in FileMaker.
One example of a case when importing data (of any kind, including date data) *will* result in an empty field is if the field has validations applied that the data fails and the "Always Validate" option is selected.
However, as Michael has noted, you haven't given us a lot to go on. A more useful and complete question tends to lead to more useful and complete answers. ;)

Sorry all, typical overtired blunder, should have taken a break. finally discovered that the field had been defined as a calculation in the early days of the development. Changed it back to DATE and it worked like a champ.
Finally, got my build and ready about 2am. Thanks for the quick response.

That would certainly do it... ;)
Glad you spotted the issue and have now got it working.
