I can't find a reference to this in the Help file, but it appears the format <<$$var>> does not work.
Can anyone confirm that each merge variable on the layout needs unique name and cannot be a repetition?

That is correct. See note #1 here:
yes, it seems that repetitions cannot be used. even the <<$$var>> does not work
so, you find a confirmation.
Otherwise, you can use a merge field on the layout with a repetition: <<glob>> it is printed correctly
Thank you Michael,
I read the help page, but my eyes just zoomed right over the text I was looking for:
A variable used as a merge variable cannot include the repetition (index) number of a repeating field (as in the syntax $variable[repetition]) or a file path.
Thanks for pointing it out and confirming.
Thanks gcatnine, for the response.
Global reps I know about. I am really quite taken with the power of merge variables and not having to have actual data in fields. They appear to be so much faster than my older way of using global fields, so I am moving in that direction.
It's a real pity FMI didn't implement this, because it would greatly increase the usability of merged variables.
I agree. Hopefully FileMaker heard the feature requests for it.
