Matt was it a widgit or a portal design?
I'm not sure. I didnt get to see it through FileMaker, it was just a screen shot.
Here is a similar screen shot from http://www.filemakertoday.com/com/showthread.php/23336-Show-Off-Your-Wares. See image attached.

Your image looked like a list view along the left which could be done with a portal showing all records via a Cartesian (X-join) self-relationship. Clicking on a record in that portal list triggers a Go To Related Records (GTRR) command using the self-same layout so that only the record clicked on in the portal would appear in the regular form-view portion of the layout at right.

I've just recently implemented this.
Yes, you need a self-join and a portal. My solution also places a global text field on the layout, just above the portal, which I use in conjunction with a two-line trigger (OnObjectModify) script to filter the portal (similar to Quick Find). A button over the portal row brings up the corresponding record in the main view.
For the self-join, a Cartesian ("X") relationship between (say) the serial field and itself will do nicely. Add the global text field as a second Cartesian join to force refreshing the portal when the filter changes.
You can add all sorts of bells and whistles, but the basic Rolodex is quite straightforward.
