I will be upgrading the FileMaker 11 Advanced server driving my web site to FileMaker 12 Advanced, and would like to tap the collective wisdom as to how best to allocate my hardware.
I have two almost identical Xserves, one to host my web site, and the other to host the FileMaker databases driving my web site. Both are Xserve 2.1 (2008) models running Snow Leopard Server, web server is Apache 2.
One is a quad-core 2.8 GHz Xeon with 8 GB RAM, the other is a Dual quad-core 2.8 GHz Xeon with 14 GB RAM. Database is resident on a 15,000 rpm drive, the web server is on 7200 rpm mirrored drives. New hardware (other than memory) is not in the budget.
My questions - Given all other aspects of the machines being equal:
- Do the extra 4-cores help FileMaker Server 12 Advanced or Apache more? (i.e. - which should be my DB server, and which my web server?)
- Where should the (newly rewritten) web publishing engine reside for best performance - on the web server or the DB server?
Thanks in advance for your advice.
