    Customer Number (Serial)


      My boss would like all new and existing customers to have a customer number.

      I created a serial but it does not work the way I want.

      It only works for new additions but not the existing customers in the database.

      I'm a newbie.

      Can someone help me with this?

          You'll have to re-serialize your records. You can use the Replace Field Contents command for that. Make sure you start your serial number from 1 (if you just want a number) and apply auto-increment 1.

            What she said is correct, plus check the box 'update serial number in entry options'. This will make it that the new records will have the continuing serial number.

               The serial number can be applied to a text field also, but you will find that sorting behaves differently (you get results like 1, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 100, 101...). To overcome the sorting issue in text fields, pad the serial number with zeros (00001 for example). The 'Replace Field Contents' command will preserve the padding. However, with a text field and zeros padding you must deal with real world issues such as 'did I pad enough zeros?'- how many customers do I expect over the life of the program?
