    Creating Forums using FileMaker?

    inov8pro

Is it possible to create Forums, like this one, using FileMaker? Is this FileMaker website built using FileMaker?

      Thanks for any help.

          a. I'm sure that you could do something like this.

          b. We're under the impression that this web forum is based on Jive.

          c. Do you want to reinvent the wheel for fun or profit? There are plenty of good forum apps available that could be installed and running in a few hours.

Just curious.  Not looking to reinvent the wheel just understand it. I have some expereience with Drupal.  Not familiar with Jive.

Yes, you can create a forum like this, also by using FileMaker.

              • Get FileMaker Server (Standard Edition)
              • Build a backend in FileMaker
              • Build a frontend with PHP/HTML

If you expect a larger number of visitors you can either:

              • Use a two machine deployment with just FileMaker (FileMaker web publishing engine/Apache on one computer and FileMaker on another).

              or

              • Use MySQL/Oracle/MS SQL as frontend and code your html/php up against this while FileMaker is stlll in charge, this is very easy with FileMaker ESS.

But still: You can get a ready to use forum for free or nearly nothing. Just install and use. And then, if you want it, you can integrate with FileMaker. Especially if you choose one that is created with one of the above mentioned databases. Just check whether the creator of the bbs supports integration or has an API or that you are sure that you understand their undelying db structure - before you start tangling with their data!

One of my colleges compiled this list for another purpose:

              http://www.minibb.com/

              http://www.phpbb.com/

              http://vanillaforums.org/

              http://www.mybb.com/

              http://punbb.informer.com/

My suggestion: If you need full controll and to be able to get it exactly as you or your customer want: Build it with FileMaker and maybe with an SQL frontend if you expect very heavy load. If one of the "run of the mill" solutions fits, then take it as it is.

              Best regards

              Carsten
