You should use SMTP. You have no client on the server.
Here are the FileMaker error codes. If you scroll down you'll see that 1501 is an SMTP authentication. You should make sure you have the correct settings. Maybe you need SSL. Talk to your provider or IT person.

Agnes, thanks for the reply. Apple Mail is on the server and is setup with a working account. Don't know why that will not work.
I can talk to my provider about using their smtp. We use Google Apps for Business for email I'm currently trying to use those settings. Receiving 1506 error now. Will update status later. Any other ideas are appreciated.
Client mail is a different app on the server machine from FM Server, and should not be running on a dedicated server anyway; FM Server won't launch it or trigger Apple Mail from a server-run script.
Get the SMTP out and all should be well.
I understand that Apple Mail and FMSA are two different apps, obviously. Thought I had read somewhere that scheduled scripts on FMSA with Send Mail will not use the local Email Client and must use smtp, just wanted that verified.
Found a link online to a FM db that tests smtp settings/connections. Using that I found a useable setup for gmail and seems all is well. Thanks for all the input.

What link was that, if you recall
you are correct, RPaulH. SMTP is needed to make the Send Mail function ON the server.
