Posting, (or Pushing?) a primary field to another table to establish relationship

I can best describe what I'm trying to do by telling how I used to do it in another DataBase application:

I used to beable to set up a "POST" which would send selected field data to another table and post them there.

In setting up this "POST", I could select matching fields so the program would know what record to modify.

AND I could tell the system to create a new record if no matching records were found. (or do nothing; my choice when setting up the Post.)

Now, trying to accomplish the same objective in FMP12 using scripts is quite challenging so far.

I have a job number created in Table A.

I have a portal setup to show the equipment being sold on the JobNumber.

I want to go to the portal source, Table B, and enter equipment without having to re-enter the job number where equipment is going to be assigned to. I want the job# field to be self populated when the script I'm writing takes me to that form from the SoldJobs entry form.

That is the sound of hair being pulled from my head!
