Outlook is a supported Gmail Imap e-mail took. See this link http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=75726
The instructions for the set are here: http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=77689
Part of the issue maybe the way you are thinking about this. Outlook is an e-mail application. Gmail is the e-mail service provider. You can get to Gmail through any Web browser. FileMaker can't use the Web Browser as the e-mail client. When you have FileMaker send e-mail with an e-mail client it uses the default e-mail client. In your case it appears that this is Outlook. You can use any number of available clients, other examples are Apple Mail, OutLook Express and Thunderbird.
If you want to integrate eMail into your FileMaker database you can use a Plugin like Mailit or 360 Works plugin.
Thank you Bruce, I have been using gmail with IMAP on Outlook. The problem
is that it takes about 3 seconds to move or delete emails from the inbox. I
have been moving over to the gmail web browser which moves and deletes and
searches much faster.
It is possible to make mailto links open in the chrome browser in gmail
instead of Outlook which is cool.
The Outlook profile also got corrupted so the gmails were getting stuck in
The fm smtp interface is buggy and puts junky characters in the header that
causes emails to get blocked by spam filters.
I was just trying to weed myself off outlook. I have tried plugins before
but they did not work very well and they don't work with fm GO.
I have been happy with the gmail interface.
Thank you, Shawn

You should be able to set gmail as you default if you use the Google Apps. That provides a "program" to set as the default mail client. I have to run out now...but I'll see if I can track down how I did it at work when I get back.
Thank you Joshua. If that would allow FileMaker to send email through it I
would be interested.
Thank you, Shawn

You have to install the Google Apps standalone apps. Then in Internet Explorer, go to Internet Options, Programs, and change the Email option from Outlook (or blank) to Gmail.
I just tried it on my PC at home and it is giving me an error. I'm not exactly sure why. It could be because I'm not logged in with my Google Apps account, or that the gmail app (which is basically the web version in a standalone window) won't accept the parameters that are being sent.
We had this working at our office, but I don't remember now exactly what we did...it was setup using FM 8. But we now are just using the SMTP feature.
Edit: And for short stuff, I just use the Open URL script step with a mailto url.
Ok. Thank you for the info.
